Milwaukee County’s transit system was overwhelmed by demand. The strained resources meant longer wait times for users and congestion on city streets. For the first time in Wisconsin, the county proposed a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system—an express bus service designed to provide fast and reliable transportation to the most popular stops.
A New Standard for Transit Service
AECOM’s team oversaw every aspect, from design and drainage to lighting, power systems, and pedestrian experience. The 34-station infrastructure was a significant engineering achievement, requiring meticulous planning, utility coordination and design.
Comprehensive planning incorporated key considerations such as ADA accessibility, ridership volumes, traffic flow, existing utilities, site constraints and future expansion opportunities. The team also prioritized sustainability, integrating 15 battery-electric buses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Dedicated bus lanes, real-time arrival information and upgraded pedestrian and bicycle facilities enhance accessibility and convenience.

The engineering team was committed to connecting major employment, education and recreation destinations with this complex transit project. A First for Wisconsin Transportation
Beyond its technical achievements, the CONNECT 1 BRT project supports economic development by improving connectivity. It reduces travel times and offers equitable access to transit-dependent riders while encouraging the use of public transportation over private vehicles.
