Mead & Hunt spearheaded a transformative 100,000-square-foot terminal expansion at Dane County Regional Airport (MSN), addressing the need for modernized facilities to support larger aircraft and enhance passenger experiences. The expansion replaced the south concourse with an elevated design matching the main concourse level, providing long-term operational benefits beyond increased gate capacity.
Engineers designed the new concourse to accommodate new, larger aircraft which have become common at the airport. The new concourse maintains the airport’s architectural style while providing a non-restrictive layout. Strategic planning maximized flexibility, enabling future adaptability and transformability. The expansion also added support spaces on a ground level below the new concourse to alleviate main terminal capacity constraints.
Operational efficiency was enhanced with new chiller systems and expanded maintenance facilities, including shops, lockers, offices and a central control center. Throughout construction, full airport operations were maintained, showcasing the team’s precise planning and execution.
Superior Airport Amenities
The project prioritized inclusivity, usability and durability. Key features include charging stations at every seat, glass-enclosed meeting rooms, a service animal relief area with advanced cleaning systems and restrooms designed for continuous access during maintenance. Additional amenities include an adult changing room, a children’s interactive play area and family-friendly facilities like nursing rooms and child-oriented restrooms.
