STH 19 from STH 78 to USH 12
2025 Engineering Excellence State Finalist
Entering Firm: JT Engineering Inc.
Client: Wisconsin Department of Transportation
The STH 19 project exemplifies innovative engineering solutions addressing complex transportation challenges. This important route connects Indian Lake Park with the Ice Age Trail but presented significant safety concerns, including narrow pavement, steep side slopes, blind hills and sharp curves. A complete redesign to enhance road functionality and user safety.
JT Engineering used extra care when designing the new roadway. The project’s location, with its rolling hills, rock outcroppings and historic sites, required careful planning to preserve both cultural and environmental resources. An integrated approach ensured the protection of these valuable areas while improving the roadway.
Drainage issues, which had caused flooding and frequent road closures, were also addressed, resulting in enhanced road reliability. Collaboration with local organizations led to a pedestrian underpass, minimizing disruptions to park users. By focusing on high-impact areas with a history of crashes, the project provided a safer, more durable roadway, improving access to recreational spaces and enhancing the travel experience for all users.
STH 19 stands as a model for balancing engineering innovation with environmental and cultural stewardship. This project sets a new benchmark for infrastructure development, ensuring both safety and sustainability for future generations.
