STH 76 / School Rd Intersection Improvements
2025 Engineering Excellence State Finalist
Entering Firm: Westwood Professional Services
Client: Wisconsin Department of Transportation
The intersection of STH 76 and School Road in Greenville had long been a site of safety concerns, with above-average crash rates and no pedestrian accommodations despite nearby schools and a YMCA. With a stop sign on School Road but free-flowing traffic on STH 76, this dangerous arrangement became even more perilous during peak traffic hours. Recognizing the risks, WisDOT responded to concerns from local users, seeking a solution that would address both safety and future traffic growth.
Westwood evaluated multiple intersection options, comparing a roundabout, signalized intersection and all-way stop. The analysis concluded that a roundabout was the ideal solution for its ability to handle increased traffic while addressing the high rates of right-angle and rear-end collisions.
Incorporating multi-modal accommodations, the roundabout allows safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists, crucial for the nearby school and recreational facilities. The design considers future growth, ensuring the roundabout can be expanded without requiring a complete reconstruction.
The completed roundabout transformed a hazardous intersection into a safer, more efficient traffic solution, reducing future costs and delays while accommodating increasing traffic volumes and providing a safe environment for all users.
