60th Street Corridor Reconstruction
2025 Engineering Excellence State Finalist
Entering Firm: Clark Dietz Inc.
Client: City of Kenosha
The 60th Street Corridor Reconstruction in Kenosha stands as a testament to the power of innovative engineering. Stretching 1.5 miles from I-94 to the city center, this vital urban artery underwent a comprehensive overhaul to address chronic congestion, aging infrastructure and stormwater management challenges, all while maintaining community functionality.
Clark Dietz faced formidable obstacles. Densely packed underground utilities, a need for enhanced flood resilience and unexpected extreme weather events tested their ingenuity. Navigating a “spaghetti bowl” of utilities during a phased, six-year approach, the team seamlessly combined design and construction, delivering a future-proof infrastructure asset. This phased approach kept traffic open for local businesses during extensive construction.
Among the standout achievements was the installation of a 78-inch storm sewer that channels stormwater directly to Lake Michigan. This superior flood solution was proven vital when the construction process was confronted by back-to-back 100-year storms. The team’s rapid response, including upstream stream redirection, kept the project on track and avoided service disruption for thousands of residents.
Delivered $1.5 million under budget, the corridor now sets a new benchmark for sustainability, traffic management, and flood resilience in Kenosha. By prioritizing technical excellence and community engagement, the 60th Street Corridor Reconstruction redefines what infrastructure projects can achieve.
