The WIS 130 Wisconsin River crossing near Lone Rock was critical yet outdated. The three aging truss bridges, built over 75 years ago, were structurally deficient, narrow and lacked shoulders, creating significant safety hazards. This corridor serves as an essential link for local communities and provides access to regional destinations for a large number of users.
A First for Wisconsin
SRF Consulting Group worked with the client and WisDOT on a novel project delivery method. The project was Wisconsin's first to use the Design-Build method, which allowed for faster completion—two years ahead of schedule—by combining design and construction processes. The team streamlined coordination with regulatory agencies and enabled construction to start shortly after the contract was awarded.
Using their unique technical expertise, SRF’s engineers replaced the three truss bridges with two prestressed concrete girder bridges. An adjoining intersection of two state highways was realigned to eliminate a hazardous rock face and new lanes were added to reduce crashes. A permanent concrete barrier was installed to protect users from rockfalls, while minimizing environmental impacts through retaining walls and beam guards.

SRF collaborated with WisDOT, the contractor, and others throughout the design and construction phases to accelerate the project completion by more than two years while developing innovative solutions and efficiencies along the way.”
