Lower Yahara River Trail Ph 2 & Fish Camp Improvements
2025 Engineering Excellence State Finalist
Entering Firm: KL Engineering Inc.
Client: Dane County Land & Water Resources Department Parks Division
Dane County has embarked on an ambitious plan to connect its extensive public bike/ped system in Madison to existing trail systems in more rural areas. While the system has gradually expanded southward, progress has been hindered by challenges such as environmentally sensitive areas, flooding risks and construction constraints.
KL Engineering took on the task of designing a trail that addressed these challenges with innovative solutions. The team employed drone-assisted site investigations to gather essential data without disturbing fragile ecosystems. Helical piles supported the boardwalk, ensuring stability in soft soils while minimizing environmental impact. Strategic winter construction further reduced ecological disruption, and the use of sustainable materials, including composite decking made from 95% recycled content, ensured durability.
The trail features a blend of asphalt paths, elevated boardwalks and a nearly 100-foot clear-span steel bridge, all ADA-compliant. Scenic lookouts, informational kiosks and recreational amenities such as an accessible fishing pier and kayak launch enhance the user experience while connecting Fish Camp County Park with Lake Kegonsa State Park.
This project stands as a model for sustainable recreational development. By harmonizing technical innovation with ecological sensitivity, the new trail fosters inclusive access to outdoor recreation, strengthens community connections and preserves the natural beauty of Dane County’s landscapes for generations to come.
